The Story of Maths: The Frontiers
of Space was a delight to watch. In this episode of The Story of Maths, Du
Sautoy was able to show the viewers how math was used in art. He visited a
museum, I think, where the artwork "The Flagellation of Christ" could
be found. It was very calculated, the way it was made. As a person who aspires
to become an Artist, I would love to master the technique in making realistic
paintings such as that one. Math was used for persectives in paintings and
drawings before and it still is today. There are exhibits all over the world
with those kinds of visual illusions. There is one in Manila that I have yet to
visit.
He was also able to vivit the
homelands of well known mathematecians likes Rene Descartes, Sir Isaac Newton,
and the Bernoulli family. Descartes was born in France. The name of the town he
grew up in was changed to La Haye-Descartes, in honor of him. Sir Isaac Newton
was born in the country of Lincolnshire. The interesting thing about the town
he grew up in, as shown in the documentary, was that almost no one from his
hometown knew that he was also a mathematician. Most of them only knew about
his contributions in Physics. The Bernoulli family is well-known for a long
line of great mathematicians. They lived in Basel, Switzerland.
He also discussed about the
controversy between Newton and Leibniz, the battle over who really discovered
calculus.
The Story of Maths is not over yet.
There is one more episode that I haven't seen but so far the episodes I have
seen were all very interesting. The last episode may be equally or even more
interesting.
