The Mathematics of Life
Connecting life, science and math, explaining the six revolutions and revealing the deeper used and understanding of mathematics are the things that the book of Ian Stewart wants to show us.
"The Mathematics of Life".
According to Mr. Stewart, Biology undergoes 6 revolution: 1.) the invention of microscope 2.) systematic classification of species 3.) the theory of evolution 4.) discovery of the gene 5.) discovery of the structure of DNA and 6.) the Mathematics.
Every revolution brings transformation which changes our thoughts, learning and the way we think about life. Mr. Stewart believed that even though mathematics played a great role during its time, Biologist won't note that mathematics is useful in doing science. That would be true. The basic of doing science is not about mathematics and there are lots of ways to perform science without the used of math. Only then, when physics came, mathematics gained a lot of vivid used. Biologist nowadays are like Mathematicians. They both use mathematics but of different purposes.
In Mr. Stewart's ways of presenting his points, readers will not encounter such difficulty in understanding what he wants us to explain. He has a vivid way of representing the important arguments that the topic has. He compared interesting things to explained difficult terms and to give an interesting description of a word. He had a good idea when he said "Numbers are the basic of mathematics, just as scales are basic to music, but the subject matter of mathematics is much broader: shape, logic, processes.... anything that has structure and pattern". There are lots of things to describe mathematics, a poem , a painting and even an architecture. Mathematics in our life is pretty obvious but it wasn't just the things that we observe and do are the application of math because there are lot more than that. The science behind the things around us involves mathematics. And the applications that I'm talking about were been discussed in the book.
Deeper understanding about mathematics will help us have a deeper understanding in science and as well as deeper understanding in science help us have a deeper understanding in Mathematics.
