“The Story of Math’s”
Mathematics is the language of the universe but also universal headache for most students includes me. Typically since we are in kindergarten we are teach to do math from adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing but through years while we are accelerating in our studies, math also accelerate making it more complicated each year. One question always lies in our head when we talk about math it’s "Why do math exist?" because we don’t like confusing things or I am the only one thinking like this? Anyhow mathematics really do important and I'll try to answer my own question.
Firstly let’s know the discoverers and how math affects our lives today. While watching a BBC documentary about The Story of Math’s makes me realize how good math is. Let start from Egyptian Math, they discover patterns and make sense of it like counting the days, measuring the area and length, decimal system, number system, fractions and notations and even binary. Imagine if they didn’t know these things and didn’t pass through us, we don’t even have a beautiful house, even know what day today or even have computers because we will not know measurements, counting and the concept of binary.
Next is Babylonian Math, they discover time (60 seconds and 60 minutes), quadratic equation, symmetrical mathematical shape, right angle triangle principle and rational number. This things make things easier and do things faster like in architecture by using symmetrical shape but this is the start of complication especially when the Greek started to have interest in math and become passionate about it example is the properties of the right angle triangle (Pythagoreans) and irrational members. Things become interesting but complicated. Later part of history is the discovery of algebra, trigonometry, calculus and all kinds of math we have today to answer more problems and to understand more about our world.
Basically speaking math is part of our everyday life and most of us didn't notice or matter about it. State for example while using computers you use math because there is math in programming, another one is your clothing we have to know our size to easily buy one and the concept of measurements applied in it. There are thousands more things on how math affects us but our current state of mind or state of my mind is mathematics is kind of nonsense its purely solving numbers to numbers without knowing how it will apply and how we use it in the future except if we major mathematics. But no matter how I dislike it I have no choice but study math as part of the curriculum and take it as gift that one day I might make use of the knowledge in mathematics in dealing our universe.
Don't push yourself too hard. Math will not remain as a school subject because we would still use it for the rest of our lives. Who knows, after watching the next episodes in this series you would learn to love math.
ReplyDeletehaha i had the same thought about math before. but you'll learn how to appreciate math eventually.. just give it time. maybe when you face the real world after you graduate, you'd appreciate and find it useful. :)
