The Language of the Universe

Every time I think about math, my head perceives an aching sensation inside my brain. Like most of the people, I hate Mathematics. Its existence seems burdensome and useless to me. I always think to myself that only basic math is useful such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. I used to think that if Mathematics subject did not exist, my life would be easier and happier. I will not be solving head aching and mind breaking problems, trying to find solutions to these problems, when I can’t even find solutions to my own life problems. The thought of it makes me sick, that is how worst I see Mathematics.
Since then, every time I hear, see or even think of it, I then do all the best I can to avoid it. But who in this world can avoid Mathematics? When everywhere, anywhere the existence of it never fades nor destroyed. I even blamed those who originated Math, whoever they are, they put this burden to me. If only I can change the course of the world and let people forget about it. My hatred about mathematics never faded, I still curse Mathematics’ existence since grade school up to college. Until, One day, The story of Maths intersected my life.
The story of Maths is a documentary film, where it outlines the history of Mathematics. The first movie we watched in Math I subject. It describes Math as the language of the Universe, It explores Math world starting and journeys to Egypt. Wherein it focuses on Egyptian’s unusual decimal system based on ten fingers of the hand. The Egyptian’s binary numbers and the building of the pyramid through their knowledge of Mathematics. One other thing that stuck to my mind are the Babylonians, wherein they originated the base 60, which is used today in telling time. These are only two things highlighted in my brain as I watched the film but these are helpful and good information of how Mathematics changed and developed the lives of the early people.
After watching the film, my hatred about Mathematics never ceases, but a fraction of it faded. As I watched the film, I learned about the importance of Mathematics, through it, Egyptians were able to build pyramid, and we were able to use the base 60 number system to tell time. I realized that Mathematics is not all about problems; It gives solutions to problems and makes our life easier without me knowing it. I realize at some point that I’m wrong for blaming Math as a burdensome for it is indeed very helpful to other people. Mathematics is not a subject, but a tool to develop people’s way of life and making it easier.

  1. "Every time I think about math, my head perceives an aching sensation inside my brain."

I know, right? I just can't seem to appreciate it even of its significance and widespread use. But thanks to the documentary, it was really a great help for us to appreciate the subject.

  5. I was struck with your words: "But who in this world can avoid Mathematics? When everywhere, anywhere the existence of it never fades nor destroyed.". Truly, though we keep on denying math's uses, the fact that it is REALLY ESSENTIAL "daw" makes me want it cursed!. hahaha
