Story of Maths - Movie Review - part 2

BBC Story of Maths part 2

The story of maths (part 2) had not much difference to the first part. It had the same approach but this time it was focused more on the eastern part of the world and how they helped to influence the modern world. The east had contributed a lot to modern math. For example, geometry, generalizations, proofs, the decimal place value system, and the hindu-arabic number system all came from the east. Mathematics developed further because of these discoveries.

Prof Sautoy still explained everything clearly like in the first part but this time, there were a lot more computer graphics/effects which were helpful, adorable ( esp. the bunnies) and entertaining to watch. The scenes were shot in beautiful locations although there were some unnecessary clips shown (if compared to part 1) which I think is because of the language barrier since they had less interaction with the locals. Prof. Sautoy was able to share some stories about some of the great mathematicians back in the day and their contributions to the world of math.

Like what I said in my review of the first part, this documentary made me appreciate math even more. We use mathematics in our daily lives. Math has made our lives easier and we have the great mathematicians in the early civilizations to thank for.

  1. You're right. We should be thankful for the ancient mathematicians instead of speaking ill as to why they've created it.
