The most impressive thing about the Pyramids
is the mathematical brilliance that was behind in making them. Pythagoras'
theorem was one of the great theorems during the time of the Egyptians and was
the theorem behind the Pyramids.
The Babylonian system of measurement was
quite sophisticated. They established that 60 seconds comprises a minute and 60
minutes composes an hour. They had a regular system for measurement, and it was
in perfect harmony with their number system. But in order to calculate and cope
with these large numbers, the Babylonians needed to invent a new symbol, which
is one of the great breakthroughs in the history of mathematics- “zero”. It is
suited not only for observation but also for calculation. They also had a
system of angular measurement.
The mathematical expertise needed to
build structures like in Palmyra, a great city made by Greeks, with such geometric
perfection is impressive given the type of technology at that time. Just like
the Babylonians before them, the Greeks were passionate about mathematics. They
were clever and they took the best from the civilizations they invaded to
advance their own power and influence, but they were soon contributing
themselves. In my opinion, their greatest innovation was to do with a shift in
the mind- the power of proof. A power that would influence humanity for
centuries.
It is very astonishing how these
different civilizations cope up with their everyday living through the use of
Mathematics which they barely know because it was now as established as that of
today. They did not oversee that what they were doing would greatly influence
what we are, the way we live and what we will be in the future.
I certainly agree with your conclusion. If it's not for the ancient thinkers that have derived math, what could possibly happen to us right now? Life would be very much harder without it.
ReplyDeleteGreat paper. The west were really a great help to what or how easy our lives are right now.
ReplyDeleteYou have really great observation and opinion and I mean that.

ReplyDeleteGreat Paper! You did a good job stating your observations. your conclusion wraps it all. your
ReplyDeleteI like the conclusion part :D . perhaps, we owe these mentioned civilizations the present and future of mathematics.
ReplyDeleteI too was amazed by the different civilizations who used math in their daily living. Nice paper!
